Travel Bali on a Budget

I am sure everyone has heard people say that travelling is SO expensive and how do people do it. Yes travelling can be very expensive but depending on the destinations you visit and the way in which you travel can greatly impact your travel budget.

I am a traveller that do not like to spend a lot of money on my trips so if you have been looking for ways to budget travel look no further because I got you.

This post is all about how to travel Bali on a budget.

Ways to Travel Bali on a Budget

Tips to Save Money on Flights

Flights are always a big part of your travel expenses for a trip and it is something you can’t avoid so finding ways to cut down the cost is always a goal for those travelling on a budget.

Some tips to save money on flights:

  • Look into Google Flights and Skyscanner
  • Look into the cheapest destination around the location you are wanting to travel to and then look to see if flying to the cheaper location first before flying to your final destination will decrease your cost
  • Look at flights far in advance and then use price tracking so you get emailed when prices increase or drop

Tips to Save Money on Accommodations

In Bali, you can find incredibly affordable accommodations. Two of the cheapest types of accommodations are hostels and villas. Depending on how many people you are travelling with the price for these can vary.

Hostels

I would recommend staying in hostels if you are travelling solo or with one other person and want to meet other travellers. Hostels are great because you can almost always find one in your price range as the rooms range in prices from privates to dorms. Hostels are also a great way to socialize and meet other travellers. Most hostels have events to meet other guests so it’s especially good for solo travellers wanting to find other fellow solo travellers.

Villas

Villas are another type of accommodation in Bali that can be extremely affordable if you are travelling with a bigger group, that way you can split the cost. If you are with a group of three or more you can find villas for almost the same price as hostel rooms. Some of the villas in Bali are beautiful with the whole place to yourself, many have multiple rooms, a pool, a kitchen and lots more.

So for those looking for the most affordable types of accommodations in Bali depending on your situation and what you would prefer for your trip, I recommend looking into hostels or villas.

Tips to Save Money on Transportation

There are lots of different options when it comes to transportation. The two types of transportation methods in Bali for travellers are motorbikes and taxis.

Motorbike

Motorbikes are a very popular mode of transportation in Bali for both locals and tourists.

Rent Your Own Scooter

Lots of tourists decide to rent a scooter in Bali because it can be a super affordable and easy way to travel around the island. I do want to warn those that do not know how to ride a motorbike or are not super confident that maybe renting a motorbike is not the best option. The roads in Bali can be a little chaotic and a little unsafe for someone not familiar with the roads and the rule of the road. But if you are confident in your abilities to ride a motorbike in Bali and you have an international driver’s license this is probably the best option for you. You can rent a bike for less than $10 CAD per day.

Grab/Gojek Scooter

Grab and Gojek are popular taxi companies in Bali that provide both car taxis and motorbike taxis. Grab and Gojek are usually more affordable than local taxis and you can use an app to order a ride. For a solo traveller, a Grab/Gojek Scooter is a great option since it’s more affordable than getting a whole taxi for yourself.

Taxis

Grab/Gojek Taxis

Very similar to Grab and Gojek scooters, the taxis are a bit more expensive but if you are sharing the ride with a few other people you are travelling with it may be the better option. It is really easy since you can order and pay for everything in the app which can give you a little more piece of mind when finding a taxi driver.

Local Taxis

Local taxis can be a bit more expensive than Grab or Gojek but many local taxi drivers will lower their prices to match those of Grab or Gojek. Many locals do not like the taxi companies Grab and Gojek because they believe they are stealing the business away from local taxi divers. So if you can find a local taxi diver for an affordable price I would recommend going with that option.

There are so many options to choose from when it comes to transportation methods in Bali and most of them are very affordable.

Tips to Save Money on Food

One of the best parts about travelling is trying the local food and dishes of the country you are visiting. In Bali, you can find super affordable and delicious food. Local foods, especially Balinese street food are delicious and super affordable. For those looking for Americanized food and restaurants that is when the prices will be higher. I recommend for those travelling to Bali and want to save some money on food eat the delicious local food.

Tips to Save Money on Excursion/Activities

Bali has so much natural beauty that you don’t need to pay to see it. If you are travelling to Bali on a tight budget I recommend getting your steps in and going on lots of hikes. Hikes to lookout points, along the water, through the rice fields, all of it is beautiful and FREE.

Temples are another popular thing to see in Bali and some are free to enter while others require a donation or fee. If you are planning on visiting quite a few temples during your stay in Bali I recommend buying a sarong. You must wear a sarong to cover your knees in the temples and renting one each time you visit a temple can add up, so buying one can be a more affordable option and a nice souvenir from your trip.

For those of you that want to spend a bit of money to go on a day tour, some tours I recommend are the Mount Batur Sunrise Hike Guided Tour and the Hidden Canyon, Temples, and Waterfall Tour in Ubud. If you are looking for tours I recommend checking out GetYourGuide or Tripadvisor.

Hope those budget travel tips were helpful for anyone planning a trip to Bali soon. Bali is a great location to travel to since it’s affordable and such a beautiful and culturally rich place to visit.
