Start Your Half-Day in Capitol Reef at the Visitor Center
Visiting the visitor center is such a great way to start your day in a new national park. You are able to ask any questions you may have or get recommendations. There are usually maps of the parks to help you find your way around. And there are bathrooms and water fountains to prepare for your very packed half day in Capitol Reef.
Hike #1 – Hickman Bridge
Hickman Bridge Trail is a very moderate and relatively short walk. The Hickman Trail is 0.9 miles (1.4km) one way, with an elevation of 400 ft (122 m). This trail has great views and starts your half-day in Capitol Reef off to a good start.
On the drive back from Hickman Bridge I recommend you make a couple of stops along State Route 24 to see the Fremont Petroglyphs and the Fruita Schoolhouse.
Picnic at the Gifford House
There are picnic tables by the Fremont River and the Gifford house to have lunch or a quick snack after your walk. After your picnic, you can look inside the Gifford House for some snacks and treats.
Drive the Scenic Drive
If you continue along the road after your picnic you will eventually be driving along the scenic drive in Capitol Reef National Park. This drive takes around 1 hour (in total) depending on how long you take at each lookout area. There are lookouts along the drive called Danish Hill, Slickrock Divide and Old Wagon Trail and then the end of the Scenic Drive is at the beginning of Capitol Gorge Trail. After you are done driving the scenic drive you will be heading back to Fremont River to park and start your second hike of the day.
Hike #2 – Fremont River Trail
Fremont River Trail Route
The Fremont River Trail starts by the picnic area where you can park and start your hike. The hike is rated a moderate hike and it is 1.0 mile (1.7 km) each way, with an elevation change of 480 ft (146 m). At the top, you get a beautiful panoramic view of the canyon which makes up for the difficult uphill hike on the way up and then you get to relax and walk downhill on the way back.
Fremont River Trail Tips
Do not let this name fool you, it fooled us, this trail is not a leisurely walk along the river. The beginning of the trail is along the river and then you end up climbing up the canyon to the top. Just want to give a fair warning because I was tired starting this walk and it was pretty difficult.
For those afraid of heights I don’t think this hike would be good for you. The trail is very close to the edge of a cliff and you do hike up pretty high, I’m not afraid of height but it did make me a little nervous so I just want to give that warning.
End of Your Jam-Packed Half-Day in Capitol Reef
After your second hike of the day, I am sure you will be tired because I sure was. That hike will bring you to the end of your half-day in Capitol Reef. For those spending the night check out Wonderland RV Park, which is right outside Capitol Reef National Park. And for those on to your next stop, you will have the rest of your day to drive to your next location.
Hope this guide on how to have the best half-day in Capitol Reef is helpful. I know lots of people don’t know about Capitol Reef but you can still see lots in only a half day so if you are able to squeeze it into your itinerary I promise you won’t regret it.
