For all my travellers with food allergies, I understand the struggle to find restaurants while travelling that accommodate food allergies. It can be difficult and a little stressful trying to figure out what you can and can’t eat and I know nobody wants to feel sick or have an allergic reaction during their trip. My sister and I are both gluten-free and while travelling around Bali found great gluten-free restaurants and learned some tips I want to share with you so you can eat the fantastic food Bali has to offer. Here is everything you need to know to eat gluten free in Bali.

Eating Gluten-Free in Bali

Basil Kitchen

Bali is a great place for those that are gluten-free but it can also be a little difficult. Locals in Bali don’t usually cook with wheat flour because rice flour is a lot more popular there. This is great because a lot of their dishes are gluten-free automatically but the downside to wheat not being a popular ingredient in their food is a lot of people that work at the restaurants might not understand when you ask if something is gluten-free or doesn’t contain wheat. This can cause some difficulty when you absolutely cannot have any trace of gluten. But don’t worry there are still lots of ways to make sure you eat great food while also eating gluten-free in Bali.

Traditional Balinese Dishes That Are Gluten Free

You can find a lot of gluten-free restaurants that specify gluten-free on their menu in Bali but unfortunately, a lot of them do not serve traditional Balinese food. A lot of the gluten-free restaurants I found were American food or Italian food which is also good but when you are travelling to a new country you want to try the local foods.

Some traditional Balinese dishes that are gluten free include…

  • Gado Gado – Indonesian salad (ask for no soy sauce in dressing)
  • Nasi Goreng – Fried rice (ask for no soy sauce)
  • Sayur Asem – Indonesian vegetable soup
  • Pisang Goreng – Banana fritter (usually dipped in rice flour)
  • Gulai Tempeh -Tempeh Strew
  • Gulai Nanas – Pineapple curry

There are lots of food options that are gluten-free at most restaurants in Bali but for those of you that are really sensitive and want peace of mind that the restaurant knows what gluten-free is, here is a list of a few restaurants that have specific gluten-free markers on their menu.

Seminyak

Canggu

Ubud

Hope that was helpful for any fellow gluten-free or celiac travellers out there planning a trip to Bali. Bali can be a great destination to eat gluten-free once you know some tips on what to order and where to eat. Have an amazing trip and enjoy the delicious Balinese food.
